"PS9" (PS9)

That best motoring video posted today made me realize something...no more high revving NA engines from M
"Whatever, the new cars will make the same numbers, right? So what?" that's what I used to think until I heard that 8300 RPM redline, and those downshifts. Low-to-mid reving cars just don't sound and behave the same. The E90 and V10 M5 are probably going down as the last of their kind of M cars. Maybe the last of their kind of performance cars, what with everyone turning to turbos and lower displacement/fewer cylinders.
Aww man...

I always thought the E60 M5 had the best sounding V10 ever. Maybe even better than the CGT. And of course everybody loves the sound of the V8 M3s.

I love my N54 powered 335isand the WRX's have been fun, but for different reasons. I'll never forget the spine tingling 9200K RPM redline of my Integra. That same sensation makes me sad for the loss of these brilliant NA machines.
We get so lost in the sea of torque, but when you're just going for a drive there is simply nothing better.

Sorry you realized it today. You'd be better off not realizing it until later.
I've been thinking about it since the turbo M3/M4 rumors came out over a year ago. So I've been sad for over a year. And the sadness doesn't get better with time :/

At least those diesel M car rumors never came true. Satans fuel M cars...*shudders*

But I bet those rumors will come true eventually.
There will be AWD diesel M cars soon. BMW will do it to compete with upcoming diesel S or RS cars from Audi.
At minimum there will be AWD petrol M3/M4/M5/M6 cars soon.

The S65 has an 8,500rpm redline. Yes, those last 200 revs are important. =) They might not make them anymore, but this one still gets me out of bed every morning.

The S55 motor redlines at 7500 rpm...it's not exactly a low revving lump.

I have the same feels.
That's my car in the picture - same color, wheels, everything (except mine has the crappy US reflectors, no front plate, and I've swapped in black grilles).
I only wish I lived closer to the mountains!

If you look at the power curves, it doesn't look like there's much reason to rev past 5500, while wringing out the S65 is intoxicating.

Power does not drop off at 5500rpm...it stays flat and maintains it to redline. You'll still want to chase the paint.

Horsepower stays flat but torque drops off. We'll see what the reviews have to say, but it seems like short-shifting is optimal in many turbo-ed cars.

LOL, torque always drops off at high rpm.
Most turbocharged cars do not maintain horsepower to redline (at least not without some ECU tuning).

Well, the S55's torque looks like it drops off a cliff well before redline.
Don't get me wrong, the numbers are very impressive; the "area under the curve" is much greater than the old engine. The character of this new engine is just completely different than the S65. I hope it's great, and that they nailed the EPS as well, but time will tell.
